There are many different treatments available for skin bleaching, including laser, cryotherapy (freezing off the lesion), microdermabrasion ("sandblast" the skin with chemical substances), oral treatments (pills) and topical products (creams and lotions).

The most common treatment is the use of a skin bleaching cream. You will find a wide variety of them on the market. For some of them you will need a prescription, the others are available over the counter.

A skin bleaching cream contains ingredients to reduce the melamin production. They inhibit tyrosinase, a enzyme that synthesizes melamin. Three of the most commonly used are:

- Hydroquinone. Very effective but also potentially harmful. Europe has banned skin bleaching creams that contain hydroquinone. In USA they are available, over the counter with concentrations of 2%, and by prescription the ones with higher percentages.

- Arbutin. It is a natural and safe alternative to hydroquinone extracted from some berry plants. It seems to whiten skin very effectively with no dangerous side effects.

- Kojic Acid. It is another natural ingredient widely used in skin bleaching creams. It is found in a type of fungi, and also when fermenting rice to make sake.It stops melanin production, it is antioxidant and has antibacterial properties.

Finding an effective skin bleaching cream should not be a problem. However, specially if your hyperpigmentation problems are not too serious, you can also try some home remedies. Keep in mind that home remedies, like commercial bleaching creams, must be applied regularly as a part of your daily routine.

For more effectiveness, always clean your skin thoroughly before applying any skin bleaching cream (homemade or commercial)

Here are some inexpensive and easy recipes to make your own skin bleaching cream at home.

(CAUTION: Do not apply on the eyes area)

- Buttermilk. One of the simplest skin bleaching home remedies is buttermilk. It contains lactic acid, which exfoliates the skin. Once the top layer is removed, the skin renews itself, appearing lighter in skin tone. Apply the buttermilk using a cotton ball. After15 minutes, rinse off the buttermilk with warm water.

- Potato. Another simple home remedy to bleach your skin. Shred a potato to form a paste, and then spread it on your skin. It is better if you do not strain the potato when grating it. You will need all its juices. The juices contain bleaching agents that help to lighten the skin. Allow the potato mask to dry and rinse it off.

- Almond Paste. Almonds contain bleaching agents. Soak 5 almonds in a bowl of water overnight. Peel and mash them, converting them into a paste. Apply the paste on your skin. Let the paste dry, and then rinse it with lukewarm water.

- Orange peel. Sun dry some orange peels. When they are fully dried, grind them to make a powder. Adding milk to the powder, make a paste and spread it on your skin. After fifteen minutes, rinse it with warm water.

- Sandalwood paste. Using sandalwood powder, lemon juice, tomato juice and cucumber juice, make a paste. Apply on the skin until it dries. Rinse it off with warm water.

- Lemon juice and honey. Using lemon juice, honey, almond and milk powder, make a paste. Apply it for 15 minutes and then rinse.

- Oatmeal, tomato juice and curd. Combine these three ingredients, and apply them over your skin. Rinse it off with cold water after 15 minutes.

- Turmeric powder and lemon juice. After makeing a paste with these ingredients, apply it on your skin. After fifteen minutes you can rinse it with water.

Again, those home remedy can be effective if your skin is just slightly hyperpigmentated. A commercial skin bleaching cream will be a better option if you have a severe hyperpigmentation.
